What is Detention?

Detention, in the context of shipping and logistics, refers to a situation where cargo is delayed beyond the agreed-upon free time or allowed waiting period at a specific location, such as a port, terminal, or distribution center. Detention charges are imposed on shippers or consignees for the extra time that the cargo occupies space beyond the allotted free time. These charges may apply to containers, trailers, or other transport equipment that remain under the control of the carrier or terminal operator for an extended period.

Detention charges are intended to incentivize the efficient use of transport equipment and terminal space, as well as to cover costs associated with delays, such as demurrage fees, labor, and storage expenses.
