Automated Manifest System (AMS)
Tags: Glossary
A system used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to automate the processing of cargo manifests for incoming shipments.
What is Automated Manifest System (AMS)?
The Automated Manifest System (AMS) is an electronic system developed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency to help streamline the process of customs clearance for commercial shipments arriving in the United States. The system is used to transmit cargo information to CBP prior to the arrival of the shipment in the U.S., allowing CBP to perform risk assessments and make decisions regarding whether to release or detain the cargo.
The AMS requires carriers to submit an electronic manifest containing information about the cargo being transported, such as the names of the shipper and consignee, the description and quantity of the goods, and the port of origin and destination. The manifest must be submitted to CBP at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled arrival of the shipment in the U.S.
