what does Class refer to?

In shipping, “class” refers to the categorization of ships or carriers based on certain criteria such as their size, capacity, and operating characteristics. This classification is typically used to distinguish different types of vessels or carriers and to determine their eligibility for certain types of cargo and routes.

For example, the classification of ships may be based on their size, capacity, and intended use. Some common classes of ships include container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, and passenger ships. Each class of ship may have different requirements for navigation, crew size, cargo handling, and safety features.

Similarly, carriers may be classified based on the type and scope of their operations. In the United States, carriers are classified into three categories: Class I, Class II, and Class III. Class I carriers provide intercity or long-haul transportation services across multiple states or regions, while Class II carriers provide intrastate or regional transportation services within a single state or region, and Class III carriers provide local transportation services within a limited geographic area.
