What are Application Standards?

Application standards in shipping refer to a set of guidelines and protocols that define the way information and data are exchanged between various parties involved in the shipping process. These standards are designed to ensure interoperability and compatibility between different systems, applications, and platforms used by shipping companies, logistics providers, customs agencies, and other stakeholders.

Some examples of application standards in shipping include:

  • Electronic Data Interchange (EDI): EDI is a standard for the electronic exchange of business documents such as purchase orders, invoices, and shipping notices. It is widely used in the shipping industry to facilitate the exchange of information between shippers, carriers, and other parties involved in the shipping process.

  • UN/EDIFACT: The United Nations/Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport (UN/EDIFACT) is a standard for the electronic exchange of data between companies in different countries. It is widely used in the shipping industry to facilitate cross-border transactions.

  • Customs Automated Manifest Interface (CAMI): CAMI is a standard used by customs agencies to receive and process information on goods being imported into a country. It is designed to streamline the customs clearance process by providing a standardized format for the exchange of information between shippers, carriers, and customs agencies.

  • Transport EDI (TEDI): TEDI is a standard for the electronic exchange of information related to the transportation of goods. It includes standardized formats for messages related to booking, shipping instructions, and status updates.
