Flammable Gas

A flammable gas is a gas that can readily ignite and burn when exposed to a source of ignition. These gases belong to Class 2 of the United Nations Dangerous Goods Classification, where they are further categorized based on their properties and hazards. Flammable gases possess a critical property – they can ignite and sustain combustion when exposed to an ignition source, such as an open flame, spark, or electrical discharge.  

These gases fall under three categories based on their flammability range:  

• Class 2.1 flammable gases ignite when mixed with air at concentrations between 3% and 100% by volume. 
• Class 2.2 gases are non-flammable but can react with water and create flammable gases. 
• Class 2.3 gases are pyrophoric (spontaneously ignite when exposed to air) or ignite when in contact with water. Examples of flammable gases are Hydrogen (H2), Methane (CH4), Propane (C3H8), and Butane (C4H10). 

The primary hazard associated with flammable gases is fire and explosion risk. These gases can quickly ignite, leading to fires or explosions with the potential for significant damage, injuries, and fatalities. So, these gases must be stored and handled with extreme care. Proper ventilation, ignition source control, and the use of explosion-proof equipment are essential safety measures.
