Identifying A Flammable Solid
A flammable solid is a solid material that has the potential to ignite and burn when exposed to an ignition source. These materials belong to Class 4 of the United Nations Dangerous Goods Classification.
Flammable solids can readily ignite when subjected to heat, sparks, friction, or other ignition sources. Once ignited, they can sustain combustion, posing fire and explosion risks. There are two primary categories;
- Division 4.1 indicates materials that are readily combustible under normal conditions of transport and storage.
- Division 4.2 materials can spontaneously ignite when exposed to air or moisture, even at room temperature.
Flammable solids encompass a wide range of materials, including some types of fireworks, certain chemicals, metal powders, and substances like charcoal.
