Air Transport Board of Canada: History and Legacy
The Air Transport Board of Canada was a pivotal regulatory body in the Canadian aviation industry. The Air Transport Board was created in response to the rapidly growing aviation industry in Canada during and after World War II. Its primary mandate was to regulate and oversee air carriers operating within the country, ensuring safe and efficient air transport services.
One of the board’s central functions was to approve and regulate air routes and services. It had the authority to grant, amend, or revoke licenses for domestic and international air routes, ensuring fair competition and routeallocation. The board also had the authority to approve tariffs, fare structures, and pricing practices for air carriers, ensuring reasonable and fair fares for passengers and shippers.
