What is the role of the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC)?

The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) is an independent regulatory agency in the United States responsible for overseeing and regulating ocean borne transportation in international trade. The FMC’s primary role is to ensure fair and competitive practices in the ocean transportation industry, safeguarding the interests of both shippers and carriers. The FMC enforces the Shipping Act of 1984, which addresses issues such as rates, tariffs, service contracts, and unfair practices in ocean shipping.

The commission also investigates and mediates disputes between shippers and carriers and monitors the activities of ocean carriers, non-vessel operating common carriers (NVOCCs), and marine terminal operators to promote a transparent and efficient maritime transportation system.
