What does Free in Out Stowed and Trimmed (FIOST) mean?

Free In Out Stowed and Trimmed (FIOST) is an extension of the FIOS shipping term. In addition to the responsibilities outlined under FIOS, FIOST terms include the requirement for the shipowner to “trim” the cargo after loading it into the vessel’s holds.

Trimming involves properly distributing and leveling the cargo within the hold to ensure stability and prevent any imbalance that could affect the vessel’s safety during the voyage. The charterer remains responsible for the cargo’s pre-carriage and on-carriage logistics, while the shipowner takes on the additional responsibility of trimming the cargo to ensure a safe and stable shipment.
