What is a Charter Service?

Charter service in shipping refers to the provision of a vessel or a fleet of vessels on a charter basis to transport goods or passengers. Charter services are typically provided by ship owners or shipping companies that own or operate vessels that are available for charter.

Charter services can be arranged for different types of vessels, such as cargo ships, tankers, bulk carriers, and passenger ships. The terms and conditions of a charter service are typically negotiated between the charterer and the shipowner or operator and are set out in a charter party agreement.

There are different types of charter services, such as time charters, voyage charters, and bareboat charters. A time charter is an agreement for the use of a vessel for a specified period of time, usually several months or years. A voyage charter is an agreement for the use of a vessel for a particular voyage or series of voyages, usually between specific ports. A bareboat charter is an agreement where the charterer takes full control of the vessel, operating and maintaining it for the duration of the charter period.
