Who is a Consolidator?

A consolidator in shipping is a company that combines multiple small shipments from different shippers into a single larger shipment, which can then be transported more cost-effectively. This process is also known as consolidation or groupage.

Consolidators typically operate in the freight forwarding industry, where they work as intermediaries between shippers and carriers, negotiating rates, coordinating logistics, and handling paperwork. They may also provide additional services such as packing, warehousing, and customs clearance.

By consolidating shipments, consolidators can offer lower rates to their customers than if each shipper were to transport their goods separately. This makes it an attractive option for small and medium-sized businesses that do not have enough cargo to fill a full container or truckload.
