What are Containers and their types?
A container is a standardized shipping unit used to transport goods by sea, road, or rail. It is a large metal box that is designed to be easily transferred between different modes of transport and is used to store and transport cargo.
There are several types of containers in shipping, each designed to meet the specific needs of different types of cargo:
- Dry containers: These are the most common type of container and are used to transport dry goods such as electronics, textiles, and machinery.
- Reefer containers: These are temperature-controlled containers that are used to transport perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, and pharmaceuticals.
- Open-top containers: These are containers that have no fixed roof and are used to transport goods that are too large or tall to fit inside a standard container.
- Flat rack containers: These are containers that have collapsible sides and are used to transport goods that are too wide or heavy to fit inside a standard container.
- Tank containers: These are containers that are designed to transport liquid or gas products, such as chemicals or petroleum.
- Special containers: These are containers that are designed to transport specific types of cargo, such as livestock, automobiles, or oversized cargo.
Containers are typically made of steel and come in standard sizes, with the most common sizes being 20 feet and 40 feet in length. They are sealed and locked during transport to ensure the security of the cargo and are tracked using electronic monitoring systems to ensure that they are delivered to their destination on time and in good condition.
